Immersed in a crushing soundscape of sheer heaviness, Japanese doom rock outfit マグダラ呪念 Magdalene Ju-nen summons a mesmerizing auditory ritual with their release, Crimson Beast. At the heart of this oppressive void is vocalist and guitarist Kotama Mako, who brilliantly discards traditional guttural growls in favor of a distinctly feminine, hauntingly distorted vocal approach. Her abrasive yet hypnotic shrieks pierce directly through a suffocating wall of sludgy bass and dragging riffs, creating a deeply unsettling contrast.

Magdalene Ju-nen weaponizes this auditory darkness to express mono no aware—the traditional Japanese sorrow for the fleeting nature of all things.
