Emerging from the mists of the ancient Sussex weald, Bretwalda ᛒᚱᛖᛏᚹᚪᛚᛞᚪ is a stirring Anglo-Saxon black metal opus by UK underground entity Hyrde. Forged in the winter of 2023 as the solitary vision of Osbryht, the project operates as a powerful exhumation of lost heritage, sung entirely in Old English.

Hyrde’s sound masterfully bridges the chaotic din of a Dark Age shield wall with the quiet, pastoral solitude of a bygone era. Drawing profound inspiration from epic poems like Beowulf and The Wanderer, historical struggles for overlordship, and ancient folklore, the album bypasses empty nostalgia. Instead, it delivers a fiercely immersive saga.
